We will address question such as:

  • I am frequently asked to work over 40 hours at my church but I have not been paid any overtime. Is this legal?

  • What are some funding sources that are available to churches?

  • I was told that if we apply for a grant, the federal government can tell us how to run our church. Is that true?

  • We needed some paper and our secretary went to the office supply store to purchase some more and she had an automobile accident. The person that her car hit is now suing the church. Can we be held liable?

  • What church management software is available for churches with small budgets?

  • Our church went through a church split and I believe we are in need of emotional healing so we can move forward. Are there any resources available to us?

  • Our pastor has not received a raise in over five years. What kind of payroll packages should we pay our pastor in relation to our income and expenses?

  • I pastor a small church and our church cannot afford to hire a full-time secretary, are there any resources available to us?

  • We have grown to over 5,000 members and I thought that we had things in order. However, after a pastor friend of mine was arrested for doing the same thing that we do I realized that things are not as in order as they should be, so I'm concerned. When I spoke to my CPA, as well as a few others, I discovered that they were unaware of the various specific laws that cover churches and ministers. Is this common?

  • We sent our pastor on a cruise and when he was audited he was told that the cruise was taxable income. Why?

  • What statement does the IRS require to be printed on ALL contribution statements?

  • Who are contract employees and who are W-2 employees?

  • We issue our pastor a 1099 at the end of the year. Is this correct?

  • What effect does the Pension Act have on churches?

  • What is a form 8283 and when is it used?

  • We arrange songs to fit our choir and ministry needs, is this copyright infringement?

  • Our church frequently have fund raisers, are they subject to UBIT?

  • What is an accountable expense plan?

  • What is meant by segregation of duties?

  • What are the characteristics of effective church administration?

  • What is negligent hiring and does it subject our church to potential lawsuits?

  • Is the VPA still effective?

  • Do you require your youth workers to obtain a signed parental permission slip and medical consent form PRIOR to allowing any youth to attend an off-site activity?

  • What are the financial procedures for your church?

  • What is a W-9 and who receives it?

  • We paid a visiting minister $1,000 for speaking at our church. What are the legal tax requirements that our church is required to follow pertaining to this? We simply listed it as a love gift to him. Was this okay?

  • Our Pastor's Aide Committee give directly to our pastor whatever is received weekly. Is this okay for us to do?

  • How should love offerings be treated?
